Okotoks recycling fees to push monthly bills higher

Home owners in Okotoks need to get ready for higher utility bills from the Town next year.

Recycling fees will apply to the new mandatory pick up of organic waste and other recycling beginning Fall 2016.

With fees for waste collection at the town’s landfill operation, the cost will go up by $1 per household beginning this January.

Not everyone will see such a small increase in their waste collection bill. Those residents of Okotoks who are not registered for the Town’s recycling pick up program may actually see fees double.

Beginning in January, homes already on the roster for curbside recycling pick up will be $20.50 each month for recycling as well as garbage collection. Those households who not subscribed to this program will have to shell out $13.25 a month for just the garbage pickup.

When the collection of recycling in Okotoks becomes mandatory next fall, everyone will receive a monthly fill for $25. This figure is still an estimate as the Town of Okotoks is unclear as to what the rates will be 10 months from now. However, it is certain to be higher than what’s being billed now. The town will put the contract for the collection of organic waste out to tender six months from now.

As the plan is currently construed, each household in Okotoks will get a blue cart and a green cart for recycling. Blue is for the usual recyclables and green is for organic waste. Residents will receive information as to what is acceptable in each receptacle.

The town of Okotoks plans on spending almost $400,000 to buy the green bins.

In just over a year, garbage pickup in the town will become “pay as you throw”. The less garbage you throw out, the less you pay for collection. This will be monitored and enforced with the use of a radio frequency tag that will record how often a black pin is “tipped”, or emptied.

The Town of Okotoks will test this system before implemented in 2017.

If the system works, and black bins are only emptied when necessary, home owners may see refunds every quarter on their utility bill.

The public will be consulted as to the town’s new recycling initiatives throughout 2016.

Public concerns will be weighed heavily before more drastic fees come into play.

Town council wants to understand the needs of residents more fully, particularly as many households and owners of single-family homes have not subscribed to curbside service available to residents by the Town. More study into whether this is individual preference or a choice made for financial reasons.

As an environmental leader in Foothills County, Okotoks is also looking into expanding commercial and municipal waste. Currently, the Rotary Performing Arts Centre as well as the Okotoks Art Gallery and the town’s municipal facility all have recycling bins.

A challenge for the town is recycling at the Okotoks Recreation Centre, a public facility on the town’s east side.

A recent analysis of garbage from the centre revealed that a large amount of the waste generated was from coffee cups which were still filled with liquid. If these cups alone were thrown into recycling, there would be no issue. However, the liquid would contaminate the other materials in the recycling bin. This issue remains a challenge.

What's the Best way to Remove Mildew and Mold from your Home?

Mold and mildew is unsightly, stinky, and most importantly, dangerous. It's crucial to remove mold and mildew as soon as you find it. Here are the best ways to find and remove mold and mildew from your home to get it looking fresh and clean again.

Where to Find Mold and Mildew

To know where to find mold and mildew, you need to know how and why it grows. The best catalyst for mold growth is moisture. So the most likely place it will grow is in your bathroom and basement. Look for any discolorations, such as black spots on tiles. Once you see mold and mildew it is essential to remove it quickly.

So How Do You Remove Mold and Mildew?

The amount of mold determines the best method to remove it. If you see a large amount of mold it is best to call a professional. If there are only a few spots, then you can try to remove it yourself with bleach and water. Remember it's important to wear gloves and also a mask.

Remove the Problem so the Mold Doesn't Grow Back

Once you scrub the mold away then the next step is figuring out why the mold and mildew is growing. In your bathroom, try running the fan longer or opening the window. In your basement check for leaks and seal them properly. Again, mold and mildew grow in high moisture areas so the key is getting rid of as much of the moisture as possible.

So now that you know how to find mold and mildew, how to remove it, and what to do so that it doesn't come back, you can rest assured that your home is as safe and clean as possible.

As in past years, residents are encouraged to come early because parking is limited. However, downtown Okotoks on a balmy evening in late fall is not that far away from many Okotoks communities.

Elizabeth Street, McRae and North Railway will be closed to traffic from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Scheduled Events

There will be lots of merriment for families with wagon rides, ice sculpture demonstrations, cookie decorating and holiday crafts for sale. Carolers will stroll on downtown sidewalks throughout the evening.

Live music will begin at 5:30 pm on the Downtown Plaza Stage. The evening includes a visit from Santa at 6:50 pm followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree around 7:00 pm.

Next to the plaza, families will be given free glow necklaces or can take advantage of the photo booth which will be operated by an Okotoks high school graduation committee as a fundraiser.

On Elizabeth Street, there will be a Christmas Market at the Elks Hall from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm, free pet photos at the pet hospital from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and a Pony Petting Zoo beginning at 6:00 pm organized by McBride Career Group.

At the Okotoks Museum & Art Gallery, you can take photos with Santa, enjoy the Spirit of Christmas Artisan Market, do crafts and decorate cookies and of course, sip on some yummy hot chocolate.

A live choir will perform upstairs at the Rotary Performing Arts Centre with more arts & crafts on display in the lower portion of the centre.

A bonfire downtown will keep residents toasty and food trucks will be in attendance to satisfy the whole family.

The evening concludes with the ultimate holiday light show – fireworks at Lineham Park. A 12 to 15-minute fireworks show is planned from 9:00 p.m.

Okotoks Helps

Light Up Okotoks will also light up local charities. Residents are encouraged to drop off donations of food or cash at the 18 Wheels of Christmas display in support of the Food Bank. There will be a charity barbecue manned by the Okotoks Fire Department, with all proceeds going to the Okotoks Family Resource Centre’s Holiday Helper program.

Residents are also reminded that the Okotoks Art Gallery’s Tree of Warmth is where donations of new hats, mitts and scarves can be hung for those in need.

Okotoks mounts count for destructive deer

Acting on complaints from Okotoks gardeners concerned with the large numbers of urban deer munching on valuable plants, town officials conducted a deer count earlier this fall.

On September 15, more than 50 volunteers fanned out across town to see how many deer were within town limits. Okotoks was divided into districts, with each team of volunteers counting within a set boundary. The count was quick in a bid to avoid counting the quick-moving deer herd twice.

During the one hour count, the teams discovered 51 deer within the town limits with another 15 just outside for a total of 66 deer. Deer are found in every neighbourhood in Okotoks, not just in the outlying neighbourhoods.

This number will act as a baseline number so the town can monitor the deer population and take measures to control it, if warranted. The count should be repeated every two years.

The count was conducted in consultation with a veterinarian from Bragg Creek, Dr. Judith Samson-French who will work with the town to create an environment that will not be attractive to deer rather than controlling them through a cull.

Okotoks home owners can take preventative measures in their own yards to help deter four-legged visitors that dine on vegetation all winter long.

Maintain Fruit Trees

In the fall, pick low-hanging fruit and if fruit falls to the ground, rake it up as soon as possible. If deer are an issue, you may want to remove the tree altogether.

When Deer are Hungriest

Spring is when deer are trying to gain back the weight they lost over the winter. New babies are born and does are nursing. They’re looking for plants with protein and moisture like impatients, pansies and ivy. Strawberries, although they don’t grow well in many parts of Alberta, are very attractive. An adult deer needs six to 10 pounds of lush greenery every day. Make them go out to the country to find it.

Smell is Everything

You can cover up the aroma of yummy plants with herbs, especially those with a strong scent. Garlic, chives, mind and lavender can be a detergent for deer who rely on smell to find food. Their sense of touch is secondary, but you can put them off with plants that have fuzzy leaves.

Plants Deer Dislike

These plants are off the menu for your friendly neighbourhood deer:

Bleeding heart

Bluebell

Crocus

Daffodil

Fritillaria

Bluebeard

Catmint

Hyssop

Monkshood

Lily of the Valley

Spotted deadnettle

Other Tricks to Deter Deer

Deer are afraid of unfamiliar objects. You might consider scarecrows or garden ornaments, particularly those that move. Add some wind chimes or motion-activated lights. You may have to switch these around because as soon as they become familiar, the deer might move in.

You can always build a fence, but make it at least eight feet high. Electric fences are an option if you have the budget.

Visit your favourite garden centre for deer deterrents such as netting, tree protectors and wraps and deer repellent. Powders and sprays with off-putting odours and spicy flavours such as smelly eggs and ammonia or capsaicin are very effective.

Cheaper deterrents that many gardeners swear by are dryer sheets and bars of soap hung from nearby trees. These items need to be kept fresh to be effective.

Buy a dog. Besides chasing deer away, the left a scent which will scare away deer long after the dog has come indoors.
